How many questions are there and how many do I need to pass?
The test has 33 multiple-choice questions and you need at least 17 correct answers to pass.
How much does the test cost?
The test itself costs 25 euros. If you need to retake it, the fee applies again for each attempt.
Who is exempt from the test?
A German school-leaving certificate from a general school (Hauptschulabschluss or higher), or a German university degree in law, social, political, or administrative sciences, usually counts as proof of the required knowledge, so no test is needed. People who cannot acquire the knowledge due to illness, disability, or age are legally exempt under § 10 StAG, and children under 16 do not take the test. Your naturalisation authority decides in case of doubt.
How often can I retake the test?
You can repeat the test as often as you need until you pass.
When do I get my result?
The result is usually sent by post a few weeks after the test, and the certificate stays valid indefinitely.
